Description: Visual Artist-In-Residence in pediatric hospital
Mission: The Healing Arts Program provides creative outlets in various media for self-expression and the chance to learn a new skill, like watercolor painting or bookmaking, which can be an empowering as well as a therapeutic experience by helping children and their families discover their own creative resources.
Position: The Artist-In-Residence will support the initiatives of the Healing Arts Program through the development and implementation of visual arts projects and processes in a variety of settings with Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Programming will help children meet the challenges of illness as they discover their own creative resources through arts activities that focus on expression, play and imagination. Artists are trained and supervised by the
Child Life Department.
Days: Monday and/or Friday preferred
Hours: 4 to 8 hours per week
Minimum Commitment: 1 Year
Pay commensurate with experience
Responsibilities:
• Design and implement a variety of activities tailored to the needs of each child and the setting including individual sessions at the beside and playroom in small groups
• Curate an end-of-year exhibition of artwork produced and possibly program-related collateral materials.
• Support efforts of other AIRs through collaborative projects
• Recommend supply purchases and track expenses
• Daily log detailing progress
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a related field.
• 1+ years of experience in arts education.
• Ability to multi-task.
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong interpersonal skills in email correspondence, phone communication and in-person interactions, with children, families, medical staff, colleagues and external partners.
• Ability to work occasional weekends and evenings.
• A good sense of humor.
