Temporary Associate Paper/Book Conservator: Conservation Department at the BMA.

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) seeks an energetic, detail-oriented individual for the position of Temporary Associate Paper or Book Conservator to inventory, treat, rehouse, and digitize a large collection of bound and unbound silhouette albums. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with curators, registrars, and conservators to help identify collection care needs for the works, conduct conservation treatment to stabilize the silhouettes and bindings, perform rapid capture photography, and complete cataloging and inventory of a large group of 19th century silhouettes.

This is an 18th-month, donor funded position, with no possibility of renewal and is a full-time member of the Conservation department, working closely with the BMA’s director of conservation, associate paper conservator, works on paper curators, and a curatorial assistant in a collegial and fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will work independently and efficiently to prepare the works for availability through the BMA’s Nancy Dorman and Stanley Mazaroff Center for Prints, Drawings and Photographs Study Room as well as through online collections searches. The start date for this position is planned for late Summer/Fall of 2025.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will take on an integral role in the survey, assessment, and execution of cataloging, treatment, housing, moving, and reorganization of the silhouette albums. The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Conduct a thorough inventory, maintain continuity of collection information, and provide new cataloging information as needed.
  • Determine and implement treatment and rehousing needs.
  • Perform documentation photography and data transfer.
  • Administer object moves and update database records accordingly.
  • Collaborate with conservation and prints, drawing and photograph department staff, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Take on additional duties as needed.

This temporary full-time, exempt position reports to the Director of Conservation.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in art conservation or equivalent with a specialization in works on paper or books
  • Professional experience in paper/book conservation, preferably in an institutional setting
  • Capacity to work independently on projects when needed, while under the supervision of the Director of Conservation
  • Working knowledge of the principles and methodologies of the conservation profession in general as well as those specific to the conservation of works of art on paper
  • Knowledge of treatment photography and photo processing workflows
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines, and communicate clearly in both written and verbal communication
  • Familiarity with The Museum System and Excel preferred
  • Strong time management skills, attention to detail, collegial and flexible attitude, and the ability to work in a collaborative environment is essential

Must be able to lift boxes up 40lbs, stand for extended periods of time, and able to climb stairs and ladders as needed

SALARY $74,864 annually
