BMA seeks Gallery Educator– Full Time

The BMA is seeking a full-time Gallery Educator to lead dynamic, interactive tours primarily for preK-12 audiences, and for adults, visitors with disabilities, and early learning audiences as needed. BMA tours take a variety of forms—onsite; virtual; hybrid, consisting of both on-site and virtual components; and tours that take place both in the galleries and in our Joseph Education Center studio classroom. Gallery Educators are key members of the gallery teaching team and will work closely with the Manager of Gallery Learning and Director of Gallery Learning in a community of teaching practice.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Gallery Educator will collaborate with colleagues within the Education and Interpretation division, across the museum, and within the Baltimore community. They will work with curators, conservators, librarians, archivists, and educators to identify and create content for tours and a variety of resources for tour programs. The Gallery Educator supports the broad range of BMA’s Gallery Learning offerings, including:

Close Encounters, the Museum’s multiple-visit program with Baltimore City Public Schools that supports close looking, creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking skills inspired by works of art in the BMA collection. Fourth grade students participate in a hybrid program that includes a series of 3 in-gallery interactive tours that introduce students to the Museum and its collection, complemented by 3 virtual Make & Share sessions that support student creativity, self-expression, and social and emotional learning through artmaking.

Literacy through Art is a program that is part of Baltimore County Public Schools’ early learning curriculum for pre-k and kindergarten students. Classroom teachers may elect to have their students participate in person or virtually in 1 of 5 tour themes that are part of the LTA curriculum.

BMA’s suite of single-visit tour themes includes 5 options for pre-K-elementary students, 3 options for middle- and high-school students, and 4 themes for adult tours.

Accessibility programming, currently for visitors with dementia and their care partners and visitors with developmental disabilities, includes time in the galleries and time for hands-on artmaking.

On occasion, Gallery Educators will be asked to support scheduled programming on Saturday mornings for Teacher Workshops and early learning programs or on Thursday evenings for Teacher Nights.

In addition to gallery teaching, the Gallery Educator will have the following responsibilities:

  • Research and write teacher resources, such as the monthly resource Art-to-Go
  • Communicate via email and video-conferencing with teachers and tour group organizers, to establish rapport and shared tour expectations, as well as encourage participation in program evaluation
  • Produce video segments and virtual teaching slide decks, in consultation with the Manager of Gallery Learning
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Interest in working with Gallery Educators who value a culture of collaboration, kindness, civility and empathy
  • BA in art education, art history, design, education, a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Strong gallery teaching skills, especially with elementary students, and a desire to continually refine them
  • Knowledge of antiracist pedagogy, trauma-informed teaching, and social and emotional learning, and their application to gallery teaching
  • Knowledge of child development and appropriate instruction for a range of ages and abilities
  • Experience with virtual teaching via videoconferencing, preferably with elementary students
  • Flexibility and successful experience working through emerging challenges
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Spanish-language proficiency in speaking and writing highly desirable
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to tour in-person, carrying a tour bag weighing up to 5 lbs., moving through the galleries for periods of up to 5 hours, leading up to 3 distinct tour groups in that span of time.

This is a hybrid, 35 hours/week position with the expectation that the Gallery Educator will be working on-site Wednesday-Friday, to lead in-person tours. On Monday and Tuesday, the Gallery Educator may work remotely with manager approval to lead virtual tours and complete associated research, editing, and writing, or working on-site, as needed.
