Single Carrot Theatre (SCT), Baltimore’s premier alternative theatre company, creates socially relevant theatre as a form of civic engagement in Baltimore by producing vibrant, experiential performances in traditional and non-traditional theatre venues; building cross-sector partnerships; and facilitating empowering education programs. This includes three productions annually, one night events, a robust education program, and a variety of fundraising and community engagement events. Position Description
The Technical Director will work closely with the Artistic Director, Producing Director, and creative team to mount SCT’s upcoming production of BLKS in non-traditional spaces. Ideal applicants possess a technical background in theater production in non-traditional spaces, have excellent organizational and time-management abilities, can both lead and work in a team, possess good written and oral communication skills, and can manage administrative production duties. Technical Director will be expected to work a combination of daytime, evening, and weekend hours based on production needs.
Responsibilities:
Technical capacity and Build: Single Carrot performs in spaces not typically used for theatrical performance. Therefore, the technical director is responsible for assessing technical capacity of space and feasibility of designs from designers, leading build of any elements that require construction, and leading technical logistics.
Venue Relations: The TD is a main point of contact with the venue and leads all aspects of technical communication with the venue. They are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the space and damage prevention. They maintain cleanliness and organization of SCT spaces (including storage) and performance venues.
Venue Load in, Load out: TD manages the load in and load out schedules with venue staff, sources and picks up equipment or materials, troubleshoots throughout set up and the run of the production, and schedules support crew to assist as needed.
Administrative: Technical Director attends production meetings and provides report outs and input, communicates with designers on progress, manages and creates schedule for build, load in, and strike. TD manages the production budget for supplies, materials, vehicle rental and support crew hours related to production.

Production Meetings: October & November
First Rehearsal: Monday, November 14
Rehearsal Schedule: Monday-Thursday evenings 7-10:30pm, Sunday afternoons 1-5:30pm
Tech: Wednesday, January 11-Thursday, January 19
Performances: Friday, January 20-Sunday, February 12
Performance Schedule: Thursday-Saturday evenings @ 8pm, Sunday afternoons @ 2pm
COVID/Extension dates: Wednesdays during run and February 16-19
Estimated hours: October-December averaging 10-15 hours weekly, January averaging 20-30 hours weekly, February 10-15 hours weekly.
Skills and Qualifications:
Open communication and collaborative practice.
3+ years experience managing technical components of theatrical production, such as leading construction of sets, sound and lighting set up for productions, and/or installation in non-performance spaces.
Has a knowledge of and prioritizes safe practices and industry safety standards
Ability to read and realize light and speaker plots and execute light and sound set up.
Ability to read scenic blueprints and fulfill plans through set construction experience.
Working knowledge of Qlab, including programming and troubleshooting.
Working knowledge of ETC Element light board, including programming and troubleshooting.
Experience in a supervisory or leadership position preferred.
Experience in creating budgets and budget management.
Experience producing plays in non-traditional theatre venues is a plus.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis.
Valid driver’s license and comfortable driving box trucks up to 15ft long.
Comfortable working on ladders up to 16ft high
Salary & Benefits Package:
This is a temporary independent contractor position with total compensation of $7,500-$10,000 based on experience. Payment schedule will negotiated with candidate to be disbursed in biweekly payments and fluctuate based on workload and deliverables.
This position does not qualify for benefits.
