Synopsis:
It’s the year 1878 & African-American siblings Alice and Samuel are somewhere on the plains of the Midwest working with a traveling theatre company. One day during a performance of King Lear, the lead actor falls ill and a mysterious stranger offers to replace him. This leads to a tragic turn of events, leaving Samuel in search of justice and nature itself planning its own retribution.
Roles (9):
All roles open. Auditioners should be comfortable with collaborative creation, heightened language, and not cutting their hair for the duration of the rehearsal/production period.
ALICE (Black, Female, late 20’s-early 30s): Samuel’s sister. Smart, resourceful, steady. Samuel refers to her as ‘Miss Longsteps’, the walkingest girl in the world.
SAMUEL (Black, Male, early 20s): Alice’s brother & our hero. Modern, witty, real.
BOSTON CORBETT (White, male, 40s): “Castrated himself some years back and then had dinner. Only wanted to offer himself to God. I’m serious, snipped that shit off, prayed on it a little and then ate some dinner. So that might give you some perspective on what we’re dealing with here. Thinks he killed Booth. Maybe. Or has convinced himself he did, seeing as he hasn’t accomplished much else.” Itinerant pastor vibes; crazy eye(s) encouraged.

ARTHUR SUNDAY AKA J.W.B) (White, male, 40s): “He is beautiful in the way statues are as they begin to fall to ruin, his curly dark hair splashed with white, his mustache a thing of glory and vanity. Clothes, like the man, going to seed.” A passing resemblance to the real deal (plus 20 years or so) is a bonus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wilkes_Booth
ENSEMBLE MEMBERS (5, Any gender, age 18+):
A rough and rowdy crew of misfits, they portray the other members of the acting troupe including the Character Actor, Actor Manager (this role requires a British accent), Character Actress, the Juvenile, and the Leading Lady. Movement, clowning, music, and/or comedy background a plus.
