The Motor House is situated in the heart of the Station North Arts & Entertainment District, a community that is home to hundreds of artists and serves as a crossroads for Baltimore's creative communities. In the last 10 years more than $100 million has been invested in new cultural arts facilities, live/work housing for the arts, and maker spaces.

The Baltimore Arts Realty Corporation (BARCO) is seeking a Managing Director to lead the Motor House, a 25,000 square foot multi-cultural arts hub that boasts a 150-seat performance venue, the Showroom Bar, exhibition space, studios for fourteen visual and performing artists and shared office space for seven non-profit cultural organizations.

The Managing Director is responsible for developing and overseeing all operational aspects of the Motor House. We are looking for a proven, action-oriented visionary to be bold and creative in shaping Motor House’s role as a vibrant community cultural center and an ally of the arts in Baltimore.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Managing Director reports to BARCO's President, manages a team of full-time employees, and is informed by the Motor House Creative Advisory Committee.

Managing Director:

● Will be a leader in strategic planning and the evolution of existing and new programs and will be creative and willing to work closely with BARCO to enhance the mission of Motor House, its programs, and development efforts.

● Will be responsible for identifying, leading and developing a team of experienced professionals responsible for the programming and management of the daily affairs of Motor House.

● Will be responsible for leading the development of performance offerings, educational programs and artistic programming, with the goal of expansion as appropriate.

● Is required to build external fundraising utilizing local, regional, and national resources, while developing and overseeing a robust fundraising initiative with individual donors.

● Will possess the ability to develop and maintain long-term relationships that will enhance the financial, artistic, and educational goals of BARCO and Motor House.

● Will continue to develop and promote Motor House as a brand and successfully establish the venue as a recognized leader of artistic endeavors in the region.

● Working closely with BARCO, the Managing Director will be responsible for developing annual operating budgets, overseeing the assets and financial affairs of the Motor House, ensuring expenditures are in line with Motor House’s resources, and achieving an appropriate balance between revenue generation and fundraising and overall budget management, with the goal of making Motor House financially sustainable through earned and contributed revenue.

● Will help to develop, engage and support a strong Advisory Committee and help to lead committee meetings.

● Will be supported by BARCO's Property Management staff to ensure the smooth operation of the building and grounds of Motor House.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful Candidate:

● Will have a demonstrated track record of executing projects from conception to successful completion.

● Will have significant proven fundraising experience at the major gift level.

● Will have demonstrated connectedness within the performing arts community.

● Will be a skilled leader with a personal and collaborative management style.

● Will be a comfortable and engaging public speaker.

● Will be action-oriented, entrepreneurial, and possess an innovative approach to business planning.

● Will have an understanding of how social media can impact Motor House.

● Will be proficient in the use of office software programs and have the capacity to quickly become proficient in fundraising and box office ticketing systems.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

A combination of experience and education are required, providing the required knowledge and skill sets to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

● A minimum of 5 years’ experience in non-profit management with a preferred focus on arts and culture organizations, particularly theatres or music venues.

● An undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree is desirable. Experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.

● Demonstrated ability to work successfully with colleagues and partners.

● Prior café and bar management desirable.
