Walters Art Museum seeks Summer Camp Instructor - Full Time

The Walters Art Museum is seeking creative and enthusiastic individuals to work in our Education Division as Summer Camp Instructors in Family Programs. Full-time Summer Camp Instructors are responsible for writing rich, arts and museum based curricula for week-long full-day summer camp workshops based on designated themes. Instructors will co-teach the lessons with the part-time instructor. All full-time and part-time instructors for grades 1-5 must be available to teach 5 weeks of camp (June 29-July 31), review lesson plans with Summer Camp Coordinator, and attend mandatory event dates. All full-time and part-time instructors for grades 6-12 must be available to teach 2 weeks of camp (August 3-August 14), review lesson plans with Museum staff, and attend mandatory event dates.

Mandatory Teaching and Event Dates

Grades 1-5:

  • May 2: Orientation/Safety Training
  • June 20: Open House for Families/Studio Preparation
  • June 29-July 31: CAMP Monday-Friday
  • August 1:Studio Cleaning

Grades 6-12:

  • May 2: Orientation/Safety Training
  • July 18: Open House for Families/Studio Preparation
  • August 3-August 14: CAMP Monday-Friday
  • August 15: Studio Cleaning

Camps for grades 1-5 are divided into morning and afternoon activities. Full-time instructors are responsible for writing lesson plans that support a minimum of three gallery visits and four substantial art projects that are completed during the morning throughout the week. They are also responsible for planning opportunities for active, group learning in the afternoon. Students will work on a week-long project such as a large painting, performance, tour, etc. that relates to the theme of the week.

Camps for grades 6-12 are intended to support students’ portfolio development. Instructors are responsible for planning a daily gallery visit for observational drawing or discussion of how the art might relate to the students’ projects. Instructors will introduce students to at least three historical or contemporary artists, share examples of his or her portfolio, and lead discussions about art careers, portfolio development, and the vast applications of art.

Positions are supported by full-time Museum staff who will oversee the camp curricula.

Qualifications: A.A. or B.A. in studio art, community arts, art education, or museum education plus 1 year of experience working with children required. Community arts, art education, or museum education experience required. Candidates must be outgoing, provide excellent customer service, and possess strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Candidates must be mature and work well with others.
