The Valerie J. Maynard Legacy Internship is a partnership program between the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Valerie J. Maynard Foundation, to honor the legacy and vision of the artist who was a pioneering member of the Black Arts Movement, and a beloved icon of the Baltimore arts community (and beyond). This unique exchange provides interns with the opportunity to learn and gain experience in the museum field and in a private collection setting.
We are seeking to hire one new Legacy Intern to work at the BMA and Foundation during the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 cycles.
Valerie J. Maynard Foundation
The Foundation is located in the Station North Arts District. While at the VJMF, the Legacy Intern will be onsite at the Foundation to catalog and inventory artwork and archival materials pertaining to the artist’s work and collection. They will work alongside visual artists and legacy specialists to learn how to care for the robust, multi-faceted collection.
Responsibilities
- Organize and maintain accurate records
- Manage artist’s inventory
- Assist with moving, packaging, and shipping artwork as needed
- Attend trainings provided by the Foundation
The Baltimore Museum of Art
During the Fall 2024 cycle, the Legacy Intern will work in the Education & Interpretation Department. They will work closely with that team to learn about various aspects of the museum education field, including inventorying materials, managing interpretive spaces, surveying visitors, and planning/executing community events and programs.
During the Spring 2025 cycle, the Legacy Intern will transition into the Curatorial Department, working closely with staff to plan and prepare for the Baker Artists Exhibition and other shows that may require additional research and planning.
Responsibilities
- Assist with public programs (Fall 2024)
- Help maintain interpretive spaces through inventorying, surveying visitors, etc. (Fall 2024)
- Research artist’s and artwork for exhibitions (Spring 2025)
- Assist with exhibition related communications (Spring 2025)
- Attend meetings and collaborate with colleagues across the institution
Preferred Qualifications
The VJM Legacy Intern should have an interest in:
- Social Justice
- Uplifting BIPOC artists
- Community engagement
The VJM Legacy Intern should possess:
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work with a team as well as independently at times
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail (to maintain accurate records)
Internship Schedule
- Fall Dates: October 7- December 20, 2024
- The Intern will not work during the week of Thanksgiving.
- Spring Dates: March 24- May 30, 2025
The Intern will work 30 hours at the BMA and 70 hours (over 3 intensive weeks) at the Foundation per cycle. Their BMA Hours will break down into a unique schedule that BMA supervisors will create with the Legacy Intern.
- Foundation Intensive Weeks (approx. 23 hours per week at the Foundation):
- October 16-19
- November 13-16
- December 11-14
VJM Legacy Internship Eligibility
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Recent graduate from an accredited undergraduate or graduate program (within 5 years)
- 5 years of recent and relevant work experience may be substituted for a degree

BMA Internship Program Stipend
Baltimore Museum of Art Interns are awarded a $2,000 stipend. The stipend is distributed in two installments throughout the Internship.

Notification of Decision

JJC Stipend
Thanks to a generous gift from the Joshua Johnson Council, one Intern will be selected to be funded through their program. In addition to the $2,000 stipend, the selected candidate will have the opportunity to connect with the Council to network with professionals who are working to uplift BIPOC artists and arts professionals. The JJC recipient will join the Council during one of their regularly scheduled meetings and give a brief presentation of the project they worked on during their time at the BMA.
