Job Summary
Young Audiences is seeking enthusiastic, hardworking teachers to serve as paid, physical education interns for its
Summer Arts & Learning Academy operated in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools. This job is a key
component of the success of the Academy, and interns will have the opportunity to work in a highly innovative and
successful summer program alongside some of our state’s most experienced and accomplished professional teaching
artists and teachers. Interns will work closely with a City Schools physical education teacher to design and implement a
structured recess time promoting social-emotional learning, team-building, and creating community. In the afternoon
interns will, under the supervision of a certified physical education teacher, lead 80-minute classes teaching a variety of
sports and physical activities. In the morning, interns will be placed in an academic classroom with a teacher/teaching
artist team and will support arts-integrated literacy and/or math instruction by working with the teaching team to
incorporate movement and physical activity into the lessons where appropriate. Interns will also accompany students,
teaching artists, and staff on field trips throughout the program.
About the Summer Arts & Learning Academy:
Baltimore City Schools Summer Arts & Learning Academy (SALA), operated by Young Audiences/Arts for Learning
Maryland (YA), is an action-packed, full-day, five-week program that introduces students to a wide variety of art
forms—from illustration and spoken word to percussion, drama, and dance—and gives students a chance to work
alongside students from across the city and be taught by professional artists. Daily literacy and math classes are
co-taught by a teacher and professional teaching artist allowing students to experience reading, writing, and math like
never before...through the arts! Students have the opportunity to imagine, create, and express who they are through
the arts and try on art forms they never imagined. Students travel to different arts destinations across the city, and their
work will be celebrated through a student showcase on the final day of the program. YA will host eight Summer Arts &
Learning Academy sites throughout the City, locations TBD. Each site will host 10-13 classrooms of 26 students each.

Requirements
● Passion for teaching and working with students is a must!
● Pursuing a degree in physical education, general education, dance education or similar.
● Some experience teaching in a K-12 setting preferred.
● Interns will need to provide their own transportation to and from the school site.
Dates and Times:
To fulfill this contract, PE interns must be able to commit to attending all program days.
● Training and Professional Development Week - Wed-Fri, June 24-26 and Mon-Tues, June 29 OR 30, 9:00 am –
4:30 pm. This is required and is paid.
● Academy Dates: The program will begin on July 6th and end on August 7th. Program hours are 8:30 am
(Breakfast) to 3:00 pm. Note: one Academy location will run an additional week and end on August 14th.
● Two 1-hour planning meetings/staff meetings per week (times TBD, most likely staff meetings on Tuesday and
Thursdays at 8:00 am).
Compensation
PE Interns will be compensated based on a number of factors, including experience and the specific
circumstances of their contracted position (i.e. site location, number of teaching hours etc). PE Teachers will be
paid an hourly rate of $11.50 - $13.00 and PE interns completing the entire program will be paid up to $2,369 -
$3,133 for working the whole summer.
Scope of Work
● Develop and implement a structured recess plan focused on providing engaging physical activity and supporting
social emotional learning, team building and creating community among students and staff.
● Provide direction and support for additional interns and staff supporting recess time.
● In partnership with Young Audiences staff and university mentors, develop a curriculum for an afternoon
sports/physical activity class.
● Serve as lead teacher for afternoon enrichment class supported by a certified physical education teacher and a
teaching apprentice.
● Provide all needed support to Teacher and Teaching Artist Partner (for morning arts integration classes) both
inside and outside of the classroom.
● When appropriate, and in partnership with the teacher and teaching artist partner, incorporate movement and
physical education strategies to support the math and literacy learning taking place in classrooms.
● Ensure that classroom environment is setup on a daily basis and needed materials are available. Ensure room is
cleaned at the end of each day. Fully participate in all classroom lessons. This may include leading classroom
instruction when asked by the teaching artist to do so, working one on one with students needing individual
assistance, working on projects alongside students, and leading small-group portions of lessons.
● When appropriate, assist in developing work for showcasing at Artscape and the final culminating event.
● Provide logistical support for classes, including making copies, taking attendance, tracking assignments etc.
● Serve as a role model to students, setting an example of appropriate behavior.
● Assist with classroom management and handle discipline issues when needed.
● Serve as chaperone on all field trips.
