Reginald F. Lewis Museum Seeks Communications Manager

Reporting to the Director of External Affairs, the Communications Manager will develop, guide, and implement the strategy for all communications, website, and public relations messaging and collateral to consistently articulate the Reginald F. Lewis Museum (RFLM) as the premiere experience and best resource for information and inspiration about the lives of African American Marylanders. The Communications Manager will ensure that RFLM is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of this information throughout a diverse constituent base and network.

Position Responsibilities

The Communications Manager ensures that all forms of media and communications, including print, broadcast, social media, and internet materials, build and maintain the museum’s reputation and brand. The main responsibilities of this position are to:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate an annual communications plan in collaboration with the Director of External Affairs
  • Lead the generation of online content that consistently engages audience segments and leads to measurable action; decide to whom, where, and when to disseminate; current platforms include Facebook, Instagram, and twitter.
  • Maintain webpages and their relevance, ensuring that new and consistent information is regularly posted (article links, stories, and events)
  • Develop content, design, publication, and distribution of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, fliers, posters, invitations, and website.
  • Establish a comprehensive media list, build relationships with key media, create and distribute press releases and media alerts
  • Coordinate interviews and photo/video shoots, attending as needed.
  • Plan, negotiate, place, and track traditional and non-traditional paid media buys and in-kind opportunities
  • Write for a variety of needs: newsletter content, public remarks, acknowledgement letters, fundraising appeals, grant narratives, and other communications as needed
  • Monitor public relations communications and analyze effectiveness, including social media, website, email, and advertising. Track and measure the level of engagement within all on-line platforms over time.
  • Create and maintain a photo bank
  • Prepare monthly reports detailing communication outcomes

Skills & Qualifications

The Reginald F. Lewis Museum is seeking an accomplished Communications Manager with at least

5 years communications experience, ideally in an “in-house” leadership role within a complex nonprofit entity, and covering areas such as website content, newsletters, and donor communications. The ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels is critical.

Specific requirements include:

  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • Experience developing and implementing communication strategies
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Highly collaborative
  • Passion for the mission of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Adobe , Photo Shop, Excel, and Publisher,
  • Ability to manage and update website content (Wordpress)
