Overview:
The BMA is seeking a dynamic and innovative Assistant/Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, with a specialization in Media Arts and Live Events. This position reports to the Senior Curator/Department Head of Contemporary Art. The Department is supported by a Curatorial Assistant, work study students, and interns.
The Assistant/Associate Curator of Contemporary Art will be immediately engaged in proposing and implementing exhibitions, projects and programs featuring media arts and performance. These projects will be featured in the Out of Actions/Art After Hours series, Black Box series, and BMA Meyerhoff Auditorium, as well as other BMA galleries and venues. A goal of these projects will be to increase the diversity of artistic perspectives shared with the BMA’s public.
Responsibilities:
Work with living artists to incorporate a diverse and dynamic array of media and time-based art into the BMA program.
Support the overall exhibition, collection and educational program of the contemporary department
Propose and assist with media arts and performance related acquisitions
Work with Senior Curator to identify media and performance artists for inclusion in large-scale exhibition initiatives
Work with the Conservation department, Registrar’s Office and artists to develop long-term conservation plans and digital storage for media holdings
Work with Exhibitions Department to make recommendations about equipment and space needs for collection and temporary projects
TMS record-keeping on all media arts and performance-related collection objects. Includes completing new media questionnaire for all existing and future collection holdings in this area.
Assist with outgoing loans and accessions documentation
Serve as resource on Media arts and performance for the museum, including but not limited to Marketing & Communications and Education departments’ initiatives
Develop and implement collaborations with area colleges and universities related to film, media and performance programs
Cultivate donors in area of expertise
Participate in Friends Group program and “Contemporary Collector’s Group” in areas of expertise.
Requirements:
This position requires an advanced degree with a specialty in Contemporary Art, a record of scholarship on time-based and media art, and a minimum of 3 to 5 years of curatorial experience. The Curator will work collaboratively both inside and outside the institution and will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including writing and public speaking skills. The candidate will be creative, innovative, and influential. S/he will be skilled in diplomacy, negotiation, planning, organization, and motivating teams. S/he will have an already established network of contacts in the contemporary art world.
