Executive Director’s Letter October 29, 2019

Lighting up the city, the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) is uniting two of its marquee events: Baltimore Book Festival and Light City. The new combo festival, now called Brilliant Baltimore, will illuminate us with literature, ideas, world-class light art installations, and live performances. Check out the schedule of books, performances, food & drink, and light art here and see all the action taking place November 1 through 10 throughout the city. There are so many things to explore, it’s a great time to invite your friends who may live out of town to experience the best of Baltimore.

Last Friday, Baltimore and the country laid Representative Elijah Cummings to rest. Cummings was deeply engaged and connected to Baltimore's arts and cultural organizations. He also understood the profound and enduring impact of arts education. He was an honorable man who passionately defended his city and watched over our country, I hope that we may see many more men and women follow in his footsteps. They are truly needed right now.

If you are looking for something to get you in the Halloween spirit check out "The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death." These exquisitely detailed miniature crime scenes are a quintessential Baltimorean experience and the Maryland Historical Society is offering a unique opportunity to learn more. Frances Glessner Lee (1878-1962) crafted her studies to train homicide investigators to “convict the guilty, clear the innocent, and find the truth in a nutshell.” These dioramas of true crime cases revolutionized homicide investigation and are still used for training today. On October 30, panelists will discuss Glessner Lee’s life, work, and the process of conserving the Nutshells for display at the Renwick Gallery in 2017. Light refreshments will follow the panel.
