UALP Fellow & MICA graduate student, Rhea Beckett curates Black Space, pairing three artists to three local businesses exploring black culture.

Black Space activates three project spaces – New Beginnings Barbershop, New Door Creative, and Shake and Bake Family Fun Center. The exhibit opens dialogue on timely themes of culture and runs from April 3rd to 30th.

Black Space exhibit asks What is a black space? Three Baltimore-based artists influenced by black culture, aesthetic, and history are paired with three local businesses that have been integral to the black communities in which they serve, igniting existing cultures within these spaces.

Curator Rhea Beckett believes that through community spaces, ideas are shared, communal concerns are raised, and common goals are achieved.

Black Space exhibit aims to bring socially engaged and relevant arts programming to everyday community spaces in order to reach as many people as possible.

Black Space exhibit will open in conjunction with MICA Grad Show Openings at Maryland Institute College of Art.

Curator Rhea Beckett was born in Silver Spring, Maryland, raised in Dayton, Ohio, and currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland. She serves as a Fellow in the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance’s Urban Arts Leadership Program and is a Masters in Fine Arts Candidate at Maryland Institute College of Art. For the past year‐and‐a‐half, she has been researching and developing Black Space as part of her curatorial thesis.
