About the Baltimore Arts Education Coalition
The Arts Education Coalition is a group of concerned citizens who organized when the search for our new CEO began. We advocated that the City School Board select a leader who values the arts, is committed to high quality arts instruction, and would bring a willingness to engage community partners in ensuring access to the arts for all city school students.
The group formed shortly after the Any Given Child Initiative -- an effort facilitated by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and coordinated by Arts Every Day in partnership with City Schools, and the city of Baltimore -- whose data collection efforts confirmed far too many students do not receive dance, music, visual arts or theater education nor do they benefit from the array of programming offered by our arts and cultural nonprofit organizations.
The Coalition is united around the idea that every child in this city deserves the opportunity to have a quality education that includes the arts. We are not alone. Year after year, Baltimore City school parents have cited “creativity and the arts” as a top priority for their students and schools. In the 2012-13 School Climate Survey, data indicated that 90% of parent respondents said the arts were most important, second only to learning climate.
