The 36 finalists were selected from over 600 people who created a Baker Artist Portfolio in 2023
BALTIMORE, MD—The Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance (GBCA) has announced the finalists for the 2023 Baker Artist Awards. The finalists, according to their disciplines, are:
Visual Arts: Nancy Linden, Richard Liu, Quentin Moseley, M. Jordan Tierney, Lars Westby, and Jowita Wyszomirska.
Interdisciplinary: Hoesy Corona, Oletha DeVane, Liz Downing, Katherine Fahey, Kei Ito, and Fahimeh Vahdat.
Film/ Video: Marnie Ellen Hertzler, Jonna McKone, Corrie Parks, Margaret Rorison, Russell Sharman, and Chung Wei-Huang.
Literary Arts: Elizabeth Dickinson, Sylvia Jones, Edgar Kunz, Tonee Moll, Nguyen Nguyen, and Heather Rounds.
Music: Judah Adashi, Abdu Ali, Irene Jalenti, Mark Navarro, Outcalls Band, and Anthony Parker.
Performance: Anna Fitzgerald, Christopher Johnson, Colette Krogol, Nicole Martinell, Glenn Ricci, and Juanita Rockwel.
The finalists were selected by an anonymous jury for exemplifying excellence in three areas: mastery of craft, depth of artistic exploration, and a unique vision.
“It is such an honor to host all artists on the Baker Artist Portfolio and exciting to see the excellent work of our finalists,” said Jeannie Howe, Executive Director at GBCA. “Thanks to the support and vision of the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial fund, their work will be viewed in almost every corner of the world.”
The 2023 Baker Artist Awardees will be selected from among these finalists and will be announced this June. One artist from each of the six artistic disciplines will receive a $10,000 Mary Sawyers Baker Prize. One of the six selected artists will also receive the additional $30,000 Mary Sawyers Imboden Prize, for a total prize of $40,000.
Sponsored by the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund, the Baker Artist Awards has given more than $1.3 million to over 150 artists since the program’s inception in 2009, this includes $90,000 in award money each year.

The William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund was established in 1964 by Mary S. Baker in memory of her husband. Awarding grants that range from $1,500 to $45,000, the Baker Fund continues its founders' civic-minded philanthropic tradition, benefiting the residents of the greater Baltimore area. The Baltimore Community Foundation has managed the Baker Fund’s grants program since 1985.
