In a recent announcement, Governor Larry Hogan laid out his proposed budget cuts. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the economy of Maryland and the nation, so it is not surprising that the pain of cutbacks will be felt in all sectors. What is concerning is the extent of cuts--$300 million--to public education. As stated by our friends at Strong Schools Maryland and Arts Education in Maryland Schools, “Given the great amount of instructional time students have already lost and uncertainty for the upcoming school year, especially for arts disciplines, these cuts are unacceptable. Now is the time to be investing in students, not taking away from them.”

The Board of Public Works is voting on these cuts tomorrow, July 1st. What can you do? Follow this link to send a message of opposition to the Board of Public Works today!

Today is the final day of LGBTQ+ Pride Month 2020. GBCA adds its voice to those around the world who celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. June was chosen to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion in New York City—a turning point for activism and efforts to change laws that discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community. Typically, Pride includes peaceful protests to raise political awareness and support. However, many activities were canceled or were moved to virtual platforms due to COVID-19. Many of the events that did take place, however, amplified and centered the voices of Black and Indigenous members of the LGBTQ+ community. To our friends, we see you, and we honor you.
