Today in partnership with T. Rowe Price, and the Baltimore City Public Schools, the Enoch Pratt Free Library launched One Book Baltimore. This is a collaborative effort aimed at Baltimore City 7th and 8th graders, their families, and community members designed to provide connections through literature. Discussions and programming will be held across the city this fall to spark conversations focused on peace and change in our community. The 2019 Selection is A Long Way Down. This is New York Times bestselling author Jason Reynolds’s electrifying novel that takes place in sixty potent seconds—the time it takes a young man to decide whether or not he’s going to murder the guy who killed his brother. Other partners include Baltimore CityLit, Maryland Humanities, WBAL TV, Baltimore Cease Fire, Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts, and the Maryland Book Bank.

Given that October is National Arts and Humanities Month, it’s a great time to head down to your local library and check out a book. You can also celebrate by writing, painting, dancing, singing, or simply expressing yourself creatively and connecting with others. Because isn’t that what arts and humanities are about, a connection to our shared lives, compassion, and love? We could all use some of that.
