Executive Director’s Letter October 16, 2018

Congratulations to Amy Sherald, Lafayette Gilchrist, Margaret Rorison, Lisi Stoessel, Abraham Burickson, and Dora Malech, on their recent Baker Artists Awards exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art. It was a terrific show and we were pleased that so many of you were able to make it to the opening last month. Speaking of Baker, for the very first time and as part of our 10th Anniversary celebration, GBCA will be mounting a special exhibition at The Peale Center for Baltimore History and Architecture. All visual and interdisciplinary artists who have active portfolios on the Baker website are eligible to hang one wall piece for display November 15th - December 17th, 2018. Interested in participating? Make sure you have logged into your Baker account by the November 1st deadline, and complete the form here. Over fifty artists have already entered, so don’t delay!

How are you celebrating the 200th anniversary of Frederick Douglas? Born into slavery in on Maryland’s Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake, Douglas escaped to freedom and became a leading statesman and advocate for equal rights. This Thursday, October 18th at the Frederick Douglas-Isaac Meyers Maritime Park you can be part of the opening of Imagining the Journey of Frederick Douglas: Drawings and Prints by Ed Towles. We hope to see you there.

Also on Thursday is the Baltimore City Council Youth and Education Council hearing on Arts Education from 5-7:00 PM at City Hall. RSVP HERE. Baltimore City Public Schools in partnership with Arts Every Day launched the Baltimore Arts Education Initiative in 2017 to ensure access to arts education for every student in every school. In collaboration with over 100 community members and district leaders, the 2017 Arts Education Strategic Plan was written and adopted by Dr. Sonja Santelises, CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, as part of her Blueprint for Success. Come out to demonstrate your support of arts education for every child.
