Executive Director’s Letter April 10, 2018

This year, for the first-time, GBCA has been shining a spotlight on finalists from the Baker Artist Portfolio. Just last week, Bird in Hand was packed for readings by Leslie Harrison, Dora Malech, Timmy Reed, Jen Michalski, and Jung Yun. Up next is a special exhibition featuring a selection of the Visual & Interdisciplinary Arts Finalists at The Peale Center. The featured artists are Laura Amussen, Erick Antonio Benitez, Abraham Burickson, Jeffrey L. Gangwisch, Noa Heyne, Christine Neill, Rachel Rotenberg, Fred Scharmen, Susan Waters-Eller, and Stewart Watson. The Opening Reception takes place tomorrow, Wednesday, April 11, 2018, from 6pm to 9pm. The exhibition runs through May 6. Self-guided visits are free, by appointment, on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 12-6pm, and Sundays from 10-4pm. Book your visit here.

In the Fall, the 2017 and 2018 Baker Artist Award winners will be featured with a special exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Also at the BMA is opening an exciting new exhibition, Odyssey: Jack Whitten Sculpture, 1962-2017 which runs from April 22 through July 28.

We've launched a new program that features stories about GBCA members and the remarkable work they are producing. Read Limelight's first feature, Cassandra Miller interviewing Elizabeth Evitts Dickinson about the upcoming CityLit Festival. The Baltimore-based writer and 2017 Rubys grant recipient, is hosting a panel with other Rubys recipients at the annual CityLit Festival, which is chock full of workshops, readings, lectures and panel discussions with dozens of new and established writers. Do you have a story you'd like to pitch? Contact Nick Horan at [email protected]!

Rubys Artist Grant literary awardees will also be featured in a new conversation series called Off-The-Page: Creative Conversations that pairs artists and writers whose work overlaps in a unique way at The Ivy Bookshop. Join us for the inaugural conversation on Thursday, April 26, 2018 that pairs writer Jen Grow and theater artist Temple Crocker as they discuss issues of memory, loss, and identity.

Put away your snow shoes and get out your Bermuda shorts!

Best,

Jeannie
