Light City Time!

A hearty congratulations to former GBCA Board member, John Berndt and the extraordinary creative team at The Berndt Group (TBG). TBG has been recognized with a Gold ADDY Award for its donated creative work on the Baker Artist Portfolios website, GBCA’s online database featuring artwork by contemporary Baltimore-area artists. Organized by the American Advertising Federation of Baltimore, the ADDY Awards highlight the best creative marketing work being produced in Baltimore. In addition to TBG’s contributions, we are forever grateful to the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fundfor their vision in creating the portfolios and for their ongoing support.

I also want to give a shout out to Everyman Theatre for their Salon Series. Yesterday, on World Theatre Day, I hosted their Women’s Voices reading of Julia Cho's' THE LANGUAGE ARCHIVE. It was a true joy. In the past it has been so difficult to find substantive roles for women. The plays were just not being published, or produced. Thank you to the women of Everyman for bringing the plays in this series to light.

Speaking of light--it’s Light City time, gang! This free festival includes large-scale light installations, performances, music and innovation. Don’t miss the central feature, the BGE Light Art Walk along Baltimore’s Inner Harbor with more than 50 attractions including illuminated sculptures, projections, interactive technologies, performances, concerts, food vendors, and a children’s area. Festivities begin this Friday evening and run through Saturday, April 8.

GBCA would like to welcome Nicholas Cohen as Maryland Citizens for the Arts’ new Executive Director. Nick comes to MCA from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO)where he served as Director of Community Engagement and Education Programs. MCA has made extraordinary progress during John Schratweiser’s very successful seven-year tenure leading MCA’s arts advocacy and service programs, a time during which the Maryland State Arts Council’s appropriation grew more than $6.5 million (52 percent). John is returning to his adopted home of Chestertown, Maryland to serve as Director of the Kent County Arts Council and launch ARTikultur-MD, a new artist residency program. I am excited to work with Nick and to support MCA’s continued success. Mighty advocates like MCA are critical to the success of the entire arts community in Maryland and beyond.
