Bloomberg Philanthropies has awarded a grant to fully fund paid summer internships with arts organizations for 25 rising senior high school students. I am spending today with the Maryland Delegation and Maryland Citizens for the Arts in Washington, D.C. at Arts Advocacy Day, organized by Americans for the Arts. Advocates from all over the country are fanning out to meet with members of congress. It has been inspiring to be among so many smart and passionate people. Today's efforts are focused on preserving the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), which President Trump’s proposed federal budget eliminates. The NEA is the only funder in America that funds the arts in every single state, U.S. Territories and the District of Columbia, with 40 percent of program funds distributed through local arts agencies.
One budget item I wanted to include in last week’s advocacy alert is the proposed zeroing out of the National Heritage Area under the Department of the Interior. Our very own Baltimore National Heritage Area (BNHA) was designated as a national heritage area in 2009, joining 48 other national heritage areas around the country that work tirelessly to promote, preserve and enhance our historic and cultural legacy and natural resources for current and future generations. Over the past decade, BNHA has developed walking tours, installed interpretive signage, assisted with Sailabration and the Star-Spangled Spectacular (as well as the 2017 Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show Baltimore) and, perhaps most importantly annually awards hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant funding to heritage tourism projects across the city.
At this time, it is critical that you contact your representatives and urge your Senators to send a letter supporting full funding of National Heritage Areas to the Appropriations Committee. Now is the time for action!
Congratulations to Tom Hall on his triumphant finale as Artistic Director of Baltimore Choral Arts. For 35 years, Tom has inspired and entertained us. He has also made numerous contributions to the broader cultural community, including to GBCA. We are so grateful for his commitment and glad that his next chapter will keep him right here in Baltimore. Now, please join GBCA in welcoming Anthony Blake Clark who will succeed Tom and carry the Baltimore Choral Arts baton into the future!
