Get Ready for Olympic Temperatures Baltimore

If you think the dog days of summer have passed, just take a peek at the weather report for this weekend. Olympic temperatures are expected, so it might be a nice time to hang out in the Enoch Pratt Free Library, take in a show, or explore one of Baltimore’s treasured museums. Want to read a new book? Why not pick up the new One Maryland One Book selection, All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. However, if you prefer to embrace the heat, you can always hit the Creative Alliance on Sunday for a little Buckwheat Zydeco.

For those of us who enjoy exploring the natural world, its your chance to see the Perseid Meteor Shower this weekend. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to experience, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. The shower peaks this year on the night of August 12 and the morning of August 13. The waxing gibbous moon will set shortly after midnight, leaving fairly dark skies. Best viewing is after midnight. Drs. Alex Storrs and Joel Goodman will have meteorite fragments and high power viewing telescopes to look at planets and moon and will explain the meteor shower phenomenon at the Howard County Conservancy on Friday, August 12 from 10pm to August 13 at 1:30am.

The damage was devastating and it will take everyone, including the artists and arts businesses a long time to recover. You can show your support by making a contribution to the Re-create: Ellicott City Artist Relief Fundat the Howard County Arts Council (HCAC). Join HCAC on September 18th from 6 –8pm for its Annual Meeting & Grant Awards Reception. Or visit their Paint It! Ellicott City show and check out the artwork available for purchase. HCAC will also invite local galleries to set up pop-up shops at the Paint It! Ellicott City closing reception on September 30th to benefit the Re-create: Ellicott City Artist Relief Fund.
