The storm outside today is like my state of mind. It can’t decide to rain or shine and I am anxious to know what will happen next. We are in a collective state of uncertainty, dislocation, disequilibrium, distress, and desire for great leaders. How fortunate we are to have the artists, the creators, and the makers—all on a constant voyage of exploration. Along with our treasured scientists and physicians, artists will continue to explore the human condition, even when that condition is not good.
Some of the artists we are particularly grateful for are among the Baker Artist Award Finalists—writers, musicians, visual artists, and more. This Thursday and next, you can meet some the incredible finalists at our virtual showcases. Additionally, with a special thanks to our friends at WTMD, you have two opportunities to hear the Baker Music Finalists on the radio! Here’s how you can experience the Baker finalists:

One thing we can be certain of is that artists and cultural organizations are among those deeply hurt by the economic impact of the COVID 19 crisis. The CARES Act, allows individuals to claim a new deduction of up to $300 for contributions to nonprofit organizations in 2020. Whether you decide to support the arts, the Maryland Food Bank, or other worthy causes, you now have an added incentive. But do remember the many ways your favorite cultural organizations are important to you, or consider making a donation to the Baltimore Artists Relief Fund.
Thank you for being a reader. Stay well, read some poetry, and breathe deep.
My best,
Jeannie
