Over the past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to attend and present at conferences in the south and southwestern parts of our country. Most recently, Navasha Daya and I led a session at the Association of Performing Arts Service Organizations (APASO) to discuss culture shifts and how to manage them in successfully recruiting and managing a diverse Board of Directors. It was an honor to work with Navasha, who is Cofounder/Director of the Healing and Performing Arts of the Youth Resiliency Institute in South Baltimore’s Cherry Hill neighborhood. If you are interested in the topic and want to know more, we will be doing a repeat performance at the Maryland Arts Summit. The Summit takes place on the campus of UMBC June 6 through 8, 2019.
GBCA has also been spending time with its local constituents and members throughout the region and in different fields. As we are about to enter a fresh planning process with the DeVos Institute of Arts Management, we wanted to know more about trends, needs, possibilities for collaboration and, most importantly how GBCA can best serve the sector. One exciting result of these sessions is the development of a 2019-2020 universal online theatre calendar, something that no longer exists in our region in print, or online. Click this link to submit your organization's season programming and we'll blast it out to all of our subscribers and list it on our website. The deadline to submit is Monday, June 3rd by 5 PM.
Last Friday, the Baker Art Awards Ten-Year Retrospective exhibition opened at Maryland Art Place (MAP). It includes the works of a wide range of excellent visual, literary, interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary, performing, and film/video artists and runs until June 15. You won’t want to miss it. We are so grateful to our friends at MAP for their part in making this such a stellar show.
And it’s nearly time! Tune in to Maryland Public Television this Friday to find out which artists have been selected as the 2019 Mary Sawyers Baker, and Mary Sawyers Imboden awardees. This special segment of ArtWorks, hosted by Rhea Feikin will air May 17 at 7:30 pm. The GBCA family is excited and thrilled to share the news.
Congratulations to the Maryland Film Festival and Interim Executive Director Sandra Gibson on another spectacular year! I am already looking forward to 2020.
Best,
Jeannie
