CLASS: Improvise a musical: Intro to Musical Improv with Baltimore Improv Group

CLASS: Improvise a musical: Intro to Musical Improv with Baltimore Improv Group

Improvise a Musical! The next class with Baltimore Improv Group starts Thursday May 1 at The BIG Theater. That’s just 3 weeks away. If you’ve been thinking about trying musical improv, this is your season.

You’ll build songs and scenes from scratch, with classmates who are just as new (and nervous!) as you. It’s a 4-week class plus a final showcase where you perform a completely improvised musical: villains, heroes, group numbers and all!

If you’ve ever belted a showtune in the car, missed theater since high school, dreamed of being on stage, or just want to try something really different and joyful, this class is for you.

The class will be on Thursdays from May 1st til May 22nd with a showcase on Thursday, May 29th. Class time runs from 6:30-9:30pm and the cost for the 4 weeks will be $180.

You don’t have to know how. That’s what we’re here for.

This class is carefully scaffolded. That means each skill builds on the next. You’ll go from “I don’t sing” to “wait... did I just sing a duet?” Think less “perfect pitch,” more “musical mischief”

Lots of people who take this class have never done improv! Or haven’t sung since high school! Or aren’t sure what to expect. Now, they’re performing in shows, creating improv teams, oandr just feeling braver in everyday life. You’ll get theater and stage skills too, such as: how to project, how to hold space on stage, and how to play to your audience.

Why this class? Why now?

Whether you want to be a better performer or a more confident person, musical improv can change your life!

Improv helps you get out of your head, be more playful, and surprise yourself. Some take it for stage experience. Some take it for joy.

If this idea’s been sitting in the back of your mind for a while, this is your invitation.

We’ll meet you where you are.

Meet your teachers

Brian and Sheree have been performing together on the long-running Baltimore Musical Improv team Bad Karaoke Experience since 2017. Both trained in improv and musical improv at Baltimore Improv Group and at the Magnet Theater in NYC, where they studied the specific fairy tale-style musical format taught in this class.

Fun fact: Brian is a non-practicing classical piano major. Sheree once played Dorothy in a production of The Wizard of Oz in Ohio.

Tell a friend! Word of mouth really matters.

If you’ve taken this class, or just think someone would love it, please send it their way. Maybe it’s the friend who asked about musical improv, or the student who wants something new, or a grown-up theater kid looking for a playful creative outlet.
