Jo Ulrich: A Life Interrupted
Join us at Gallery 1448 for the opening reception of Jo Ulrich: A Life Interrupted.
Ulrich (1956 – 2023) was a force of nature. An unbounded spirit, friend, feminist, truth teller, confronter of bullies, gardener, mother to fairies, animals and all the children she never had, a caregiver for literally anyone in need, a weaver of magic, and an advocate for the underserved. She wielded a sharp wit and abundant creativity.
Ulrich’s friends and loved ones knew that she also had a darker side. Having suffered severe childhood trauma and abuse, she wrestled with those horrific memories and her sense of self-worth. She struggled to embrace all the things that made her extraordinary.
She started painting in 2017, six years before she ended her life, leaving 40 paintings behind. Despite her work’s vitality, most of it never left her studio.
This memorial exhibition is a tribute to Ulrich and her remarkable achievements as well as an acknowledgement of her struggles. Proceeds from the sale of paintings will go to the Jo Ulrich Fund for Women’s Health at the Baltimore Community Foundation. The show runs through August 18. Gallery hours are Saturdays & Sundays, 2:00 – 5:00 pm. For information, contact Bill Eggbeer at [email protected] or 301-520-5572.
