Free Playwriting Workshop: August 7, 2021

Submission Window: July 10 - September 3, 2021

Inspired by Paula Vogel’s Bake-Offs, the Two Strikes Theatre Brown Sugar Bake-Off is a celebration of Black women creatives and the stories they have to tell. In our second year, the Brown Sugar Bake-Off will focus on a new theme: BODY. Misogynoir, colorism, objectification, and body-shaming are a part of the Black woman’s experience. This year’s focus is on what it means to take ownership after an undeniable history of the policing of Black and Brown bodies.

We are searching for Black women and non-binary playwrights to write short plays using the ingredients and recipe below. A panel of readers will select the plays for virtual production in October 2021. Stipends will be provided to all Festival participants.

The Recipe:

Playwrights must identify as Black women or non-binary

Submissions can be in any form but cannot exceed 10 pages (10 minutes or less).

Submission must have 5 characters or less

The piece must feature a Black woman/non-binary protagonist

Must include ALL of the following ingredients.

The Ingredients (can be physical, literal or symbolic):

a mirror

shapewear

a fitting room

peach /“peach emoji”

BMI (Body Mass Index)

Colorism

Brown Sugar

Playwright applications and play uploads will be accepted until midnight September 3rd via the

Playwright's Google Form located HERE.

The submission must be a PDF attachment, with the playwright’s name and contact information removed from the actual script

Submissions must include a character list containing the genders and ages of characters if applicable
