JOB SUMMARY
Young Audiences is seeking enthusiastic, hardworking artists/teachers to serve as teaching artist assistants for its Summer Arts and Learning Academy operated in partnership with Baltimore City Public Schools. This job is a key component of the success of the academy, and teaching assistants will have the opportunity to work alongside some of our state’s most experienced and accomplished professional teaching artists. Assistants will be paired with a teaching artist for the entirety of the program and will work closely with them to plan and implement lessons in their given art form. Assistants will assist with set-up and breakdown, assist students in learning through the art form, assist with attendance and record keeping, and assist with the coordination of student showcases and performances/exhibitions throughout the city. Assistants will also accompany students, teaching artists and staff on field trips.

ABOUT THE SUMMER ARTS AND LEARNING ACADEMY
Baltimore City Schools Summer Arts and Learning Academies operated by Young Audiences Arts for Learning Maryland (YA) will be an action-packed, full-day, five-week program that introduces students to a wide variety of art forms – from illustration, to spoken word, to percussion, to drama and dance—and gives students a chance to work alongside students from across the city and be taught by professional artists. Daily literacy and math classes will be co-taught by a teacher and professional teaching artist allowing students to experience reading, writing and math like never before through the arts! Students will also have the opportunity to imagine, create, and express who they are through the arts. Students will travel to different arts destinations across the city, and their work will be celebrated through a student showcase on August 5th. YA will host four Summer Arts and Learning Academies throughout the City (locations TBD). Each site is expected to accommodate 9 classrooms with 25 students in each for a total of 225 students per site.
REQUIREMENTS
- Passion for the arts is a must!
- High school graduate (required), college experience or graduate (preferred).
- Experience and passion for working with students.
- Assistants will need to provide their own transportation to and from the school site.
WORK HOURS AND COMPENSATION
- Orientation and Initial Planning Meeting date and time TBD (2 hours).
- Training Date: One day between Monday, June 27- Friday, July 1 from 900am – 4:00pm. Location TBD.
- Summer School Dates: July 5th – August 5th; Artist Assistant 12:30pm-3:30pm daily (3 hours daily).
- Students will take two field trips throughout the program (dates TBD, but most likely on Fridays). On field trip days teaching assistants will work the full day to ensure that there are enough chaperones. Hours on these two days will be 8:30 am - 3:30 pm. $15.00 per hour for training and program dates.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide all needed support to Teaching Artist Partner both inside and outside of the classroom.
- Assist teaching artist with classroom and material setup and cleanup.
- Fully participate in all classroom lessons. This may include leading classroom instruction when asked by the teaching artist to do so, working one-on-one with students needing individual assistance, working on projects alongside students, and leading small group portions of lessons.
- Provide logistical support to teaching assistant, including making copies, taking attendance, tracking assignments etc.
- Serve as a role model to students setting an example of appropriate behavior.
- Assist with classroom management and handle discipline issues when needed.
- Serve as chaperone on all field trips.
- Assist with lunch and playworks times as assigned.
